Dark Places of the Earth
The Ulfen people are a seafaring folk mostly found along the coasts and mighty rivers of northwestern Avistan. Fair-haired and pale-skinned, their ways seem strange and barbaric to the folk of the Inner Sea coast. For centuries they were feared in coastal lands as far away as western Garund as pirates and raiders, and through invasion and settlement they formed the source of many of the distinctive features of the Chelaxian people.
The Ulfen have never known unity nor true peace, ruling a collection of fractious kingdoms known collectively as the Lands of the Linnorm Kings. However, in recent centuries they have mostly reserved their battle fury for each other and their monstrous foes in winter-blighted Irrisen, and have interacted with other peoples more as traders and mercenaries. Nevertheless, Ulfen warriors are feared and respected throughout the Inner Sea Region, to the extent that the emperor of Taldor entrusts his safety to the elite mercenaries of the Ulfen Guard.
The Ulfen people are best known for their berserking Barbarians and the boisterous battle-songs of their skalds (Bards), but like other humans they have found success in any number of professions. As adventurous travelers more than familiar with the unforgiving wilds of the north, they traditionally devote their prayers to Desna, Erastil, and Gorum, but they have also wholeheartedly adopted the worship of Caiden Cailean from the Taldans and Torag from the Dwarves.
